Getting Around Udon Thani
Getting around in Udon Thani hasn’t changed much in the last decade or so.
The public transportation system in Udon Thani is very poorly designed compared to Europe / USA.
The buses do not run by a time table, only operates 07:00 – 18:00 and the routes are very limited.
Having a private vehicle in Udon Thani is not a luxury but a necessity if you are exploring the city.
We recommend to either rent a motorbike or a car to make your trip a little easier, instead of relying on the buses.
Car Rental in Udon Thani
Renting a car while visiting Udon Thani is highly recommended, especially if you live outside Udon Thani city area, due to lack of public transportation you will appreciate the freedom of having a car highly.
Especially true for tourist visiting Udon Thani as most of the tourist attractions in Udon Thani are located very far apart and the public transportation is not covering all the tourist attractions, very difficult to explore Udon Thani without a private vehicle.

Rent a motorbike
Renting a motorbike in Thailand is very cheap.
Prices range from 200-600 THB / Day, depending on your choice of bike.
Traveling by renting a motorbike is far cheaper than other alternatives, however, we would suggest renting a motorbike only if you are confident in your motorbike riding skills.
If you have no previous experience with a motorbike, please do not attempt to learn in Thailand.
Thai roads have a very high number of fatalities on the road each year that is motorbike-related accidents.
Taxi service
If driving in Thailand is not your thing, there are many taxi meter available in Udon Thani city.
They are usually parked at Udon Thani airport and In front of Central Plaza shopping mall.
The meter starts from 50 THB. A trip from Udon Thani airport to Central Plaza would cost about 120-150 THB or so.
Songtaew
Songtaew in Thailand is modified pickup trucks, with modified seats and roof to accommodation up to 18 passengers. (Both standing and sitting) Songtaew is a very common means of transportation for short distances, songtaew can also be seen in other cities in Thailand such as Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Udon Thani, and Bangkok.
The price is a flat rate of 10 THB per trip, regardless of where you get on / off.

Buses
Udon Thani has bus routes connecting to all the major cities such as the capital city Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket.
There is 2 bus terminal in Udon Thani called New bus terminal and old bus terminal.
The new bus terminal is located on the Udon Thani ring road, buses from the new bus terminal only travel to the northern cities of Thailand while the old bus station, located in the city center is the nationwide bus terminal with buses from all over the country.
